The Formula
Ohio sales tax is calculated as a percentage of the pre-tax purchase price:
Total = Purchase Price + Sales Tax
Where:
Combined Rate = State Rate (5.75%) + County Rate (0.75%–2.25%)
Combined Range = 6.50% to 8.00%
Example: $200 purchase in Cuyahoga County (8.00%)
$200 × 0.08 = $16.00 tax
Total = $216.00
Ohio's sales tax applies to most tangible personal property and some services. The state rate of 5.75% is set by the Ohio Revised Code. County rates are set by county commissioners and can change. Always verify the current rate for your specific location.
