The Formula

Florida sales tax is calculated by applying the combined rate to the purchase price:

Sales Tax = Purchase Price × Combined Tax Rate

Total Price = Purchase Price + Sales Tax

Where:
Combined Rate = State Rate (6.00%) + County Surtax (0.00%–2.50%)
  Combined Range: 6.00% to 8.50%

Example: $200 purchase in Hillsborough County (8.50%)
  $200 × 0.085 = $17.00 tax
  $200 + $17.00 = $217.00 total

The state rate of 6.00% is the same everywhere in Florida. The county discretionary surtax varies from 0.00% to 2.50% and is set by each county. Some counties cap the surtax at the first $5,000 of a single item's price.

FAQ

Florida's state sales tax rate is 6.00%, which is the same in every county. On top of that, most counties add a discretionary surtax ranging from 0.00% to 2.50%. The combined rate ranges from 6.00% to 8.50%. Hillsborough County (Tampa) has the highest combined rate at 8.50%. Orange County (Orlando) and Lee County (Fort Myers) are among the lowest major counties at 6.50%.
No. Unprepared food (groceries) is exempt from Florida sales tax. This includes items like bread, milk, fruit, vegetables, meat, and canned goods. However, prepared food (restaurant meals, hot deli items, catered food) is fully taxable. Candy and soft drinks may also be taxable depending on how they are classified.
Florida has four tax-free periods each year — more than any other state. They include: Back-to-School (Jul/Aug) for clothing, school supplies, and computers; Hurricane Preparedness (May/Jun) for generators, batteries, and emergency supplies; Freedom Month (July) for outdoor recreation and event tickets; and Tool Time (September) for skilled trade tools and equipment. Each period has specific item categories and price thresholds.
Yes, clothing is fully taxable in Florida at the combined state + county rate (6.00%–8.50%). Unlike some states (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Minnesota), Florida does not exempt clothing from sales tax. However, during the annual Back-to-School tax-free period, clothing items priced at $100 or less per item are temporarily exempt from sales tax.
No. Florida is one of seven US states with no personal state income tax. This is enshrined in the Florida Constitution. As a result, the state relies more heavily on sales tax, property tax, and tourism-related taxes for revenue. The absence of income tax makes Florida especially attractive for retirees, remote workers, and high-income earners. However, the combined sales tax of up to 8.50% is above the national average.
