How to Use This Calculator

Tab "Hourly ↔ Annual"

Enter your pay rate and select the type: hourly, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or annual. The calculator converts to all other periods instantly. Adjust hours per week (default 40) and KiwiSaver rate to see the impact on your take-home.

Tab "Minimum Wage Check"

Enter your hourly rate to see if it's above or below the NZ minimum wage ($23.15/hr). The calculator also compares your rate to the Living Wage ($27.80/hr) and shows the annual underpayment amount if you're below minimum.

Tab "Holiday Pay Impact"

Enter your annual gross earnings and employment type. For casual workers, see the 8% holiday pay loading and true hourly cost to the employer. For permanent workers, see the value of 4 weeks annual leave and 11.5 public holidays.

The Formulas

Hourly to annual:
Annual = Hourly × Hours/week × 52 weeks
Monthly = Annual ÷ 12
Fortnightly = Annual ÷ 26

Minimum wage comparison:
Difference = Your rate − $23.15/hr
Annual underpayment = |Difference| × Hours/week × 52

Holiday pay (casual):
Holiday pay = Gross earnings × 8%
True hourly cost = (Gross + Holiday pay) ÷ Total hours

Annual leave value (permanent):
Leave value = Weekly pay × 4 weeks
Public holidays value = Daily rate × 11.5 days

Frequently Asked Questions

40 hours per week is the standard full-time work week in New Zealand. Unlike some countries, 37.5 hours is uncommon as a standard. Most employment agreements define full-time as 40 hours (8 hours/day, 5 days/week). There is no legal definition of "full-time" in NZ employment law, but 40 hours is the accepted norm used by Employment New Zealand and IRD.
The starting-out wage ($18.52/hr, 80% of adult minimum) applies to: (1) 16 and 17-year-olds, except those supervising or training other workers; (2) 18 and 19-year-olds who have been continuously on a specified benefit for 6+ months and are not supervising/training others; (3) workers aged 20+ in recognised industry training involving at least 60 credits per year, for the first 6 months. After the qualifying period, the adult minimum wage applies.
Casual workers receive 8% of their gross earnings as holiday pay, paid with each pay cycle. This replaces the 4 weeks of annual leave that permanent employees receive. The 8% must be shown separately on the payslip — it cannot be absorbed into a higher base rate. If you work regular, predictable hours, you may actually be a permanent employee entitled to annual leave instead.
KiwiSaver contributions (3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10% of gross pay) are deducted from your pay after PAYE tax is calculated but before you receive your net pay. Your employer also contributes a minimum of 3%. While contributions reduce your immediate take-home, the money goes into your retirement fund. You can apply for a contributions holiday if you've been contributing for at least 12 months.
The minimum wage ($23.15/hr) is the legal minimum — employers must pay at least this amount. The Living Wage ($27.80/hr) is a voluntary rate calculated by the Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ. It represents the hourly rate needed for a worker to meet basic necessities and participate in the community with dignity. Some employers voluntarily pay the Living Wage and become accredited Living Wage employers.
