The Formulas

Wage conversion:
Hourly โ†’ Annual = Hourly rate ร— Hours/week ร— 52 weeks
Annual โ†’ Hourly = Annual salary รท (Hours/week ร— 52)
Daily rate = Hourly rate ร— (Hours/week รท 5)

Casual loading:
Casual rate = Base hourly rate ร— 1.25
Minimum casual rate = $24.10 ร— 1.25 = $30.13/hr

Part-time pro-rata:
Pro-rata salary = Full-time salary ร— (Part-time hours รท Full-time hours)
Pro-rata leave = 4 weeks ร— (Part-time hours รท Full-time hours)

Super Guarantee:
Super = Salary ร— 12% (from 1 July 2025)

All figures are gross (before tax). The national minimum wage of $24.10/hr applies from 1 July 2025. Most employees are covered by an industry award which may set a higher minimum. Always check your specific award at fairwork.gov.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

Permanent (full-time or part-time) employees receive paid annual leave (4 weeks), personal/sick leave (10 days), and other entitlements. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on their hourly rate instead of these leave entitlements. Casuals also don't receive redundancy pay or notice of termination. From 2024, casual employees can request conversion to permanent after 6 months (or 12 months for small businesses).
Yes. Since 1 July 2022, the $450/month minimum earnings threshold for super was removed. All employees, regardless of how much they earn or their employment type (full-time, part-time, or casual), are entitled to Super Guarantee contributions of 12% on their ordinary time earnings.

The standard full-time working week in Australia is 38 hours under the National Employment Standards (NES). Some awards or agreements may specify different ordinary hours. Full-time employees can be asked to work reasonable additional hours beyond 38, which may attract overtime rates depending on the applicable award.
Part-time employees accrue annual leave on a pro-rata basis. A full-time employee accrues 4 weeks (20 days) of annual leave per year. A part-time employee working 24 hours per week (out of 38 full-time) accrues 4 ร— (24/38) = 2.53 weeks per year. The leave is paid at the employee's ordinary rate for the hours they would normally work on those days.
