How EMI & Interest Subvention Work

EMI Formula (Reducing Balance Method):
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)
Where P = principal, r = monthly interest rate, n = number of months

Example: ₹1,00,000 at 5% for 18 months
Monthly rate r = 5% / 12 = 0.4167%
EMI = 1,00,000 × 0.004167 × (1.004167)18 / ((1.004167)18 − 1)
EMI = ₹5,820/month
Total interest = ₹5,820 × 18 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹4,760

Without PM Vishwakarma (market rate 12%):
EMI at 12% = ₹6,098/month
Total interest at 12% = ₹9,764

Interest Subvention Mechanism:
Bank charges actual rate of 8% per annum
Government credits 3% subvention to your loan account
Your effective rate = 8% − 3% = 5% per annum
Saving vs market rate (12%): ₹278/month on ₹1L loan

Example: Ramesh, Carpenter in Varanasi

FAQ

PM Vishwakarma is a Central Sector Scheme launched on 17 September 2023 with a budget of ₹13,000 crore for FY 2023-28. It supports traditional artisans and craftspeople in 18 trades (carpenter, blacksmith, goldsmith, potter, sculptor, cobbler, tailor, barber, mason, basket weaver, toy maker, fishing net maker, locksmith, armorer, garland maker, washerman, boat maker, idol maker). Eligibility: age 18+, engaged in one of the 18 trades as self-employed or family-based worker, not in formal/govt employment, and not a beneficiary of similar credit-linked schemes in the last 5 years. Register at pmvishwakarma.gov.in.
PM Vishwakarma provides collateral-free credit in two tranches: 1st tranche ₹1,00,000 and 2nd tranche ₹2,00,000 (total ₹3 lakh). Each tranche has a tenure of 18 months. The effective interest rate is 5% per annum. The bank charges the actual rate of 8%, and the government provides a 3% interest subvention (subsidy) credited directly to your loan account. No collateral or guarantee is required. The 2nd tranche is available after successful repayment of the 1st tranche and adoption of digital transactions.
The toolkit grant is ₹15,000 — a one-time incentive paid via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to your Aadhaar-linked bank account. It is provided after you complete the basic skill training (5 days) and receive your PM Vishwakarma certificate. The grant is meant for purchasing modern tools relevant to your trade — for example, an electric planer for carpenters, industrial sewing machine for tailors, or precision moulds for potters. This is a grant, not a loan — you do not have to repay it.
PM Vishwakarma provides two levels of training: Basic training (5 days) for skill verification and orientation, and Advanced training (15 days) for specialised skill upgradation in your trade. During training, you receive a stipend of ₹500/day (total ₹10,000 for 20 days). Training covers modern techniques, digital tools, quality standards, and market trends specific to your trade. Training is conducted by empanelled training providers at district-level centres. Completing basic training is mandatory before receiving the toolkit grant and credit.
Step 1: Visit pmvishwakarma.gov.in and register using Aadhaar and mobile OTP.
Step 2: Get your trade verified by Gram Panchayat (rural) or ULB/Municipal body (urban).
Step 3: Complete basic skill training (5 days) at the designated training centre.
Step 4: Receive PM Vishwakarma certificate and toolkit grant of ₹15,000 via DBT.
Step 5: Apply for 1st credit tranche (₹1L) at any scheduled commercial bank with the certificate.
Step 6: After repaying 1st tranche, apply for 2nd tranche (₹2L).
You can also register at the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC). Documents: Aadhaar, bank account, mobile number, and proof of trade.
