FAQ

Any unorganised worker aged 16 to 59 who is not a member of EPFO, ESIC, or NPS (Government) is eligible. This includes construction workers, domestic workers, street vendors, gig workers (delivery, cab aggregators), agricultural labourers, fishermen, weavers, rickshaw pullers, factory helpers, and all informal sector workers. Registration is free and takes under 5 minutes online at eshram.gov.in using your Aadhaar and a bank account. Over 30 crore workers are registered as of 2025.
PMSBY (accident insurance): ₹20/year for ₹2 lakh cover. Premium was revised from ₹12 to ₹20 with effect from 1 June 2022 (Ministry of Finance circular).
PMJJBY (life insurance): ₹436/year for ₹2 lakh cover. Premium was revised from ₹330 to ₹436 with effect from 1 June 2022.
Combined (both schemes): ₹456/year for ₹4 lakh total cover (accident + life).
Premiums are auto-debited from your linked bank account on 1 June each year. If your account has insufficient balance on 1 June, the policy lapses for that year. You can re-enrol after paying the arrears.
Your PM-SYM contribution is fixed at your age of joining and does not change. Joining early saves you money:
Age 18: ₹55/month (you) + ₹55 (govt) = ₹110 total
Age 25: ₹80/month + ₹80 (govt) = ₹160 total
Age 30: ₹105/month + ₹105 (govt) = ₹210 total
Age 35: ₹150/month + ₹150 (govt) = ₹300 total
Age 40: ₹200/month + ₹200 (govt) = ₹400 total
Regardless of when you join (18 or 40), you get ₹3,000/month pension from age 60. New enrolment is only allowed up to age 40 — do not delay. Join at maandhan.in or the nearest CSC.
If you die before age 60 while still contributing to PM-SYM:
Option 1 — Spouse continues: Your spouse can take over and continue contributing the same monthly amount until age 60. The spouse then receives ₹3,000/month pension for life.
Option 2 — Exit the scheme: Your subscriber contribution plus interest (at the savings bank rate) is returned to the nominee. Before 10 years: only subscriber contribution + interest returned. After 10 years (but before 60): subscriber contribution + interest + proportionate government contribution returned.
If you have no spouse or nominee, the accumulated fund is credited to the Shram Yogi Maandhan Fund.
Yes. Gig and platform workers are explicitly covered under the Code on Social Security 2020, and the e-Shram portal actively registers them. Delivery executives, cab drivers, freelance workers on aggregator platforms, and content creators are all eligible to register if they are not EPFO/ESIC members. The e-Shram UAN is their official identity as unorganised/gig workers, which will be used to extend social security benefits as the Code on Social Security 2020 is implemented. Registering now ensures you are part of the database when additional benefits are announced for gig workers.
