The Formula

Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of basic pay, determined by the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) for Industrial Workers:

DA Amount:
DA = Basic Pay × DA Rate / 100

DA Rate Determination (by Labour Bureau):
DA% = [(Average AICPI for past 12 months − 261.42) / 261.42] × 100

Where:
AICPI = All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (Base 2016 = 100)
261.42 = Base index when 7th CPC was implemented (Jan 2016)
Result is rounded to the nearest whole number

Full Pay Calculation (7th CPC):
Gross Salary = Basic Pay + DA + HRA + Transport Allowance
HRA = Basic Pay × HRA Rate (30% / 20% / 10% for X / Y / Z class cities, when DA > 50%)
TA (with DA) = Base TA × (1 + DA Rate / 100)
NPS Deduction = (Basic + DA) × 10%
Net Pay = Gross Salary − NPS − CGHS − Other Deductions

The DA rate is revised twice a year — effective 1 January (announced ~March) and 1 July (announced ~September). DA compensates government employees for the erosion of purchasing power due to inflation, as measured by the AICPI for industrial workers.

FAQ

The current Dearness Allowance rate for central government employees is 60% of basic pay, effective from 1 January 2026. This was increased from 58% (which was effective from 1 July 2025). DA is revised twice a year — effective 1 January (announced around March) and 1 July (announced around September). The same rate applies to central government pensioners as Dearness Relief (DR).
The next DA revision will be effective from 1 July 2026, typically announced around September 2026. Based on recent AICPI trends and past revision patterns (averaging 2-3% per revision in recent years), DA for July 2026 is projected to be around 62-63%. However, the exact rate depends on the 12-month average of the AICPI (Industrial Workers, base 2016=100) and will only be confirmed when the Cabinet approves the revision.
The 8th Central Pay Commission was formally constituted on 3 November 2025 with an 18-month mandate to study pay, allowances, and pension benefits. Its report is expected around mid-2027, with implementation likely in late 2027 or early 2028 after Cabinet approval. The reference date is 1 January 2026. When implemented, DA will be reset to 0% (merged into the new higher basic pay), similar to the 7th CPC implementation in 2016. Until then, DA under the 7th CPC continues to be revised biannually. The expected fitment factor is speculated to be 2.57-2.86x, but this is unconfirmed.
No. DA rates for state government employees are determined by each state government independently and typically differ from central government DA rates. Some states follow the central DA schedule with a delay, while others have their own DA calculation methodology. For example, many states were still on the 6th CPC when the central government moved to the 7th CPC. This calculator is designed for central government employees and may not be accurate for state government DA calculation. Check your state finance department for the applicable DA rate.
Yes. Central government pensioners receive Dearness Relief (DR) at the same percentage as DA for serving employees. The current DR rate is 60% of basic pension, effective 1 January 2026. DR is revised simultaneously with DA and applies to all central government pensioners (including family pensioners). The DR formula and revision schedule are identical to DA. This calculator can be used by pensioners by entering their basic pension amount as the basic pay.
