How to Use This Calculator

Tab "Single Trade"

Enter the buy price and sell price per coin, the quantity you traded, and optional entry/exit fee percentages. The result shows your net profit or loss, ROI, and total fees paid.

Tab "Portfolio Summary"

Add up to 5 coins with their name, buy price, current price, and quantity. The calculator shows your total portfolio value, cost basis, overall P&L, ROI, and allocation breakdown per coin.

Tab "Exit Strategy"

Enter your total holdings value and the exit fee percentage. The calculator compares partial exits at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, showing gross proceeds, fees, and net proceeds for each scenario.

The Formulas

Single trade profit:
Profit = (Sell Price − Buy Price) × Quantity − Entry Fee − Exit Fee

ROI (Return on Investment):
ROI = Profit / Total Invested × 100%

Entry fee:
Entry Fee = Buy Price × Quantity × Entry Fee %

Exit fee:
Exit Fee = Sell Price × Quantity × Exit Fee %

Portfolio P&L:
P&L = Total Current Value − Total Cost Basis

Exit net proceeds:
Net = Holdings Value × Exit % × (1 − Fee %)

All calculations are pre-tax. Crypto tax treatment varies by country. Results use the currency you select but do not apply exchange rates.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — 0.5 BTC bought at $30K, sold at $65K

A trader bought 0.5 BTC at $30,000 and sold at $65,000 with 0.1% entry and exit fees.

Buy price$30,000
Sell price$65,000
Quantity0.5 BTC
Total cost$30,000 × 0.5 = $15,000
Entry fee (0.1%)$15,000 × 0.001 = $15.00
Gross sale value$65,000 × 0.5 = $32,500
Exit fee (0.1%)$32,500 × 0.001 = $32.50
Net profit$32,500 − $32.50 − $15,000 − $15 = $17,452.50
ROI$17,452.50 / $15,015 × 100 = 116.23%

The trade produced approximately $17,500 in profit before fees, with a 116% ROI. Fees totalled $47.50 on a $15K investment.

Example 2 — Portfolio: BTC + ETH + SOL

A portfolio of three coins purchased at different times, valued at current market prices.

0.5 BTC (bought $30K, now $65K)Value: $32,500 | Cost: $15,000
10 ETH (bought $2K, now $3.5K)Value: $35,000 | Cost: $20,000
1,000 SOL (bought $20, now $150)Value: $150,000 | Cost: $20,000
Total value$32,500 + $35,000 + $150,000 = $217,500
Total cost$15,000 + $20,000 + $20,000 = $55,000
Total P&L$217,500 − $55,000 = +$162,500
Portfolio ROI$162,500 / $55,000 × 100 = 295.45%

The portfolio nearly quadrupled in value. SOL is the largest holding at 69% of portfolio value, creating concentration risk.

Example 3 — Exit 50% of $217.5K with 0.1% fee

Selling half the portfolio to lock in some profits.

Holdings value$217,500
Exit percentage50%
Gross proceeds$217,500 × 50% = $108,750
Exit fee (0.1%)$108,750 × 0.001 = $108.75
Net proceeds$108,750 − $108.75 = $108,641.25

A 50% exit nets $108,641 after fees. The remaining $108,750 stays invested for potential further upside.

Understanding Crypto Profit & Loss

What Determines Crypto Profit?

Crypto profit is the difference between what you sell for and what you paid, minus any trading fees. Unlike stocks, crypto markets trade 24/7 and can be highly volatile. A coin can double in value in weeks or lose 50% overnight. Tracking your actual cost basis (including fees) gives you an accurate picture of real returns.

Why Fees Matter

Exchange fees typically range from 0.04% to 0.5% per trade. While each fee seems small, they add up: a round-trip trade (buy + sell) at 0.1% costs 0.2% of the trade value. Frequent traders or those using market orders (vs. limit orders) pay more. Always factor fees into your profit calculations.

Portfolio Allocation & Risk

When one coin dominates your portfolio (e.g., 70%+ in a single asset), a sharp drop in that coin can wipe out gains from everything else. The portfolio tab shows your allocation so you can assess concentration risk. Diversification across assets reduces the impact of any single coin crashing.

Exit Strategies

Selling everything at once ("all-or-nothing") is risky โ€” you might sell at a local bottom. Partial exits (25%, 50%, 75%) let you lock in some profit while keeping exposure to further upside. The exit tab helps you compare net proceeds at different exit levels so you can plan strategically.

Limitations

This calculator does not account for: (1) taxes (which vary by country), (2) slippage on large orders, (3) gas/network fees for on-chain transfers, (4) exchange rate fluctuations if your base currency differs from the trading pair. Use this as a planning tool, not a tax document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Profit = (Sell Price - Buy Price) x Quantity - Entry Fee - Exit Fee. Enter your buy price, sell price, quantity, and fee percentages in the Single Trade tab for an instant calculation including ROI.
There is no universal "good" ROI โ€” it depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance. Historically, Bitcoin has returned over 100% annualized in bull markets but can lose 70%+ in bear markets. Any positive ROI after fees and taxes is profitable. Compare your crypto ROI to alternatives like index funds (~10% annualized) for context.
Use the Portfolio Summary tab to enter up to 5 coins with their buy price, current price, and quantity. The calculator computes total value, cost basis, P&L, ROI, and allocation for each coin and the portfolio overall.
Selling in stages (partial exits) reduces the risk of selling at a bad price. The Exit Strategy tab compares 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% exits so you can see the net proceeds at each level. Many experienced traders take partial profits at key price levels.
No. This is a universal pre-tax calculator. Crypto tax rules vary widely: the US taxes crypto as property with capital gains rates, the UK uses Capital Gains Tax with a £3,000 allowance, and India applies a flat 30% tax on crypto gains. See the country-specific crypto tax calculators linked below.
