How to Use This Calculator

Tab "OTB Estimate"

Enter your adjusted family net income, marital status, age group, and number of children. Then expand "More options" to enter your annual rent or property tax, energy costs, and whether you live in Northern Ontario. The calculator shows your total annual OTB and monthly payment amount.

Tab "Component Breakdown"

Uses the same inputs to show a detailed breakdown of all three OTB components: OSTC (Ontario Sales Tax Credit), OEPTC (Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit), and NOEC (Northern Ontario Energy Credit). See each component's maximum, your entitlement, and how income phase-outs reduce each one.

Tab "Payment Schedule"

View your 12 monthly payment dates and amounts for the July 2025 to June 2026 benefit year. Payments are issued on the 10th of each month. Useful for budgeting and cash flow planning.

The Formulas

Ontario Trillium Benefit = OSTC + OEPTC + NOEC

1. Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC):
Maximum: $345 per adult + $345 per dependent child
Phase-out: 4% × (income − $32,586) for singles
Phase-out: 4% × (income − $40,946) for couples

2. Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC):
Occupancy cost = property tax paid OR 20% of annual rent
Claim = occupancy cost + $277 energy component + 10% of energy costs
Maximum: $1,248 (seniors 65+) or $1,095 (non-seniors)
Phase-out: 2% × (income − $30,000)

3. Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC):
Maximum: $277 (single) or $424 (family with spouse or children)
Phase-out: 2% × (income − $42,500)
Only for Northern Ontario districts

Monthly payment = Total OTB ÷ 12
Paid on the 10th of each month, July to June.

Example

Alex — Single, Age 30, $35K Income, Renting in Toronto ($1,400/month)

Alex is a single non-senior renting in Toronto (Southern Ontario) with no children and $35,000 adjusted family net income.

OSTC maximum (1 adult)$345
OSTC phase-out (4% × $2,414)−$97
OSTC result~$248
OEPTC occupancy (20% of $16,800 rent)$3,360
OEPTC claim (capped at $1,095)$1,095
OEPTC phase-out (2% × $5,000)−$100
OEPTC result~$995
NOEC (not in Northern ON)$0
Total annual OTB~$1,243/year
Monthly payment~$104/month

Tip: If Alex had a child, the OSTC would increase by $345 and the total OTB would rise to approximately $1,588/year ($132/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ontario Trillium Benefit is a combined monthly payment from the Ontario government that bundles three credits into one: the Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC) which helps offset HST, the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC) which helps with housing and energy costs, and the Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC) for residents of Northern Ontario. It's designed to help low- to moderate-income Ontario residents with essential living costs.
You must be an Ontario resident on December 31 of the tax year, at least 18 years old (or have a spouse/common-law partner, or be a parent), and file an Ontario income tax return. For the OEPTC component, you must have paid rent or property tax in Ontario. For the NOEC component, you must reside in a designated Northern Ontario district. You must file a tax return even if you have no income — CRA uses your return to calculate and issue OTB payments.
OTB payments are issued monthly on the 10th of each month, from July through June. The benefit year runs July to June, recalculated each July based on the previous year's tax return. If the 10th falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the payment is issued on the last business day before. If your total annual OTB is less than $10, it's paid as a single lump sum in July rather than monthly installments.
You don't need to apply separately. When you file your Ontario income tax return, complete Form ON-BEN (Ontario Credits) and check the box for the Ontario Trillium Benefit. CRA will automatically calculate your entitlement based on your tax return information and begin monthly payments in July. Make sure to file your return by April 30 to start receiving payments on time. If you file late, your payments will be delayed until your return is processed.
Yes. In fact, if you have zero or very low income, you'll receive the maximum OTB amount because there's no income-based phase-out reduction. The key requirement is that you must file a tax return — CRA cannot calculate or issue your OTB without it. Many people with no income miss out on OTB simply because they don't file. Both you and your spouse/common-law partner (if applicable) must file returns.
