Senior Citizen FD — Key Facts (March 2026)
Age Categories
- Senior citizen: 60 years and above (on the date of FD booking)
- Super senior citizen: 80 years and above
- Age proof: PAN, Aadhaar, passport, voter ID
Rate Advantage
- +0.50% p.a. above general citizen rates at most banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, etc.)
- +0.10% additional for super seniors (80+) at SBI (Patrons scheme), ICICI (select tenures 15-18 months)
- Some small finance banks and NBFCs offer +0.75% or higher for seniors
- Post Office Time Deposit: no additional senior citizen bonus

Special Bank Schemes
- SBI Wecare: Additional 50 bps for seniors on 5yr+ FDs (over and above the regular 50 bps)
- SBI Amrit Vrishti (444 days): 7.05% general, 7.55% senior, 7.65% super senior
- SBI Patrons: Super senior citizens (80+) get extra 10 bps
- ICICI iWish: Senior citizens get 0.50% extra; 0.60% extra on 15-18 month tenure
Tax Benefits for Senior Citizens
Section 80TTB (Old Regime Only)
- Deduction up to ₹50,000 on interest income from deposits (FD + savings + post office + co-op banks)
- Replaces Section 80TTA for senior citizens (80TTA: ₹10,000 limit, savings interest only, non-seniors)
- Not available under New Tax Regime (FY 2025-26 onwards)
- Applies to both senior and super senior citizens
TDS Threshold (Section 194A) — Budget 2025 Changes
- Senior citizens: ₹1,00,000/year (raised from ₹50,000 in Budget 2025, effective FY 2025-26)
- General citizens: ₹50,000/year (raised from ₹40,000)
- TDS rate: 10% (20% if PAN not provided)
- TDS is per bank, not aggregate across banks
- Self-declaration by senior citizens (60+) to avoid TDS
- Eligible if total income is below basic exemption limit
- Old Regime: ₹3,00,000 (senior), ₹5,00,000 (super senior)
- New Regime: ₹4,00,000 (everyone)
- Submit at the start of each FY to each bank/institution
- Not valid for NRIs
Basic Exemption Limits (FY 2025-26)
- Old Regime: ₹3,00,000 (senior 60-79), ₹5,00,000 (super senior 80+)
- New Regime: ₹4,00,000 (all ages, no special limit for seniors)
Rebate u/s 87A
- Old Regime: Up to ₹5 lakh total income → zero tax (₹12,500 rebate)
- New Regime: Up to ₹12 lakh total income → effectively nil tax (enhanced rebate in Budget 2025)
Comparison Instruments
SCSS (Senior Citizen Savings Scheme)
- Rate: 8.2% p.a. (Q4 FY 2025-26, unchanged since April 2023)
- Tenure: 5 years (extendable by 3 years)
- Max investment: ₹30 lakh (raised from ₹15 lakh in Budget 2023)
- Payout: Quarterly (1st April, July, October, January)
- Tax: Interest taxable, but 80C on deposit (up to ₹1.5 lakh) + 80TTB on interest (Old Regime)
- Eligibility: 60+ years (55+ for retired govt/defence, 50+ for retired defence below officer rank)
- Premature exit: After 1 year with 1.5% deduction (2% if within 2 years), 1% deduction after 2 years
- Where to open: Post office or authorized banks (SBI, ICICI, HDFC, etc.)
POMIS (Post Office Monthly Income Scheme)
- Rate: 7.4% p.a. (Q4 FY 2025-26, unchanged since April 2023)
- Tenure: 5 years
- Max investment: ₹9 lakh (single), ₹15 lakh (joint)
- Payout: Monthly (on 1st of each month, credited to savings/RD)
- Tax: Fully taxable at slab rate. No 80C benefit on deposit. 80TTB available on interest (Old Regime)
- Eligibility: Any resident Indian (not senior-specific)
- Premature exit: After 1 year (2% deduction), after 3 years (1% deduction)
RBI Floating Rate Savings Bond 2020 (Taxable)
- Rate: 8.05% (Jan-Jun 2026) = NSC rate (7.70%) + 0.35%
- Reset: Every Jan 1 and Jul 1
- Tenure: 7 years (no premature exit except for seniors)
- Senior premature exit: 80+: after 4yr, 70-80: after 5yr, 60-70: after 6yr
- Max investment: No limit
- Payout: Half-yearly
- Tax: Fully taxable at slab rate. No 80C. 80TTB available (Old Regime)
- No 80C benefit: Unlike SCSS
Post Office Time Deposit (5yr)
- Rate: 7.50% p.a. (Q4 FY 2025-26)
- Tenure: 1yr (6.9%), 2yr (7.0%), 3yr (7.0%), 5yr (7.5%)
- No senior citizen bonus (same rate for all)
- 80C benefit: 5-year TD qualifies for 80C deduction
- 80TTB: Available on interest (Old Regime)
- Interest: Compounded quarterly, paid annually
